Arizona Wrong Way Drivers – what can we do to stop this deadly trend? The number of automobiles in the United States has been ever increasing since the invention of the automobile. In 2014 in the United States, an estimated 260 million passenger cars were on the road. But with so many cars flooding our highways and roads; the rate of automobile injuries and deaths has also risen over the years. Although the number of fatalities has been on the decline in the past few years; unfortunately, Arizona has seen a rise in the number of wrong way drivers on our highways.

Arizona wrong way drivers have become a very serious problem. In what seems to be an unexplainable trend, wrong way drivers in Arizona are becoming a frequent occurrence and a risk to public safety. In 2012 there were 15 fatalities due to Arizona wrong way drivers. That number has risen over the last few years. Last year alone there were over 1,600 reports of wrong-way drivers on our Arizona highways; 27 of which resulted in serious injury or death. In an attempt to address this deadly problem, the Arizona Department of Transportation, Department of Public Safety, and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety held an emergency meeting in 2014.

The goal was to find the cause of this disturbing trend. The AZDOT suspects that alcohol and drugs may be a contributing factor to the increase in Arizona wrong way drivers and admits that there is no perfect solution to this problem. In the end, Arizona highway officials pledged to find workable solutions to decrease the number of wrong way driving injuries and fatalities on our roadways.

So what can be done to prevent this deadly trend? The Arizona Department of Transportation is devising a number of tactics to address this issue. These tactics range from increased traffic patrols to special roadway sensors. But officials warn it could be some time before these measures are fully implemented.  In the meantime, it will be up to Arizona drivers to help reduce the number of wrong way driving injuries and fatalities. If you see someone driving the wrong way on the highway try to alert that driver if you can do so safely. If not, report the incident to law enforcement or other authorities. Let’s all do our part to stop Arizona Wrong Way Drivers!
