Automobile Detailing Tips for Interior and Exterior Maintenance. Proper cleaning and maintenance can make a big difference at resale time. No matter how much you may love your automobile, eventually you will need to upgrade to a newer model. As time and miles begin to add up your vehicle will require more and more maintenance; while that new car appearance will begin to fade. But with proper care, you can also get the most money for your automobile at trade-in time.

Automobile Detailing Tips for Interior and Exterior Maintenance

Keeping your vehicle clean and detailed on the inside and outside will add to the value of your automobile. Not only will this help when it’s time to trade your vehicle in but will also improve it’s curb appeal while you are still driving it. After all, there is nothing like the look, feel, and the smell of a freshly detailed automobile. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars having your automobile professionally detailed. With just a few inexpensive supplies, you can do it yourself. Here are a few things you will need for proper interior and exterior cleaning and detailing.

Tools and Equipment:

  1. Car Vaccum Cleaner – You should invest in a quality car vacuum that has many attachments for cleaning carpet, upholstery, and those hard to reach places between the seats. Also, make sure it has a long extension hose so you can reach all areas of the interior.
  2. Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner – Just vacuuming alone will not clean stains on the upholstery and carpet. Consider spending a little more and buy a carpet and upholstery cleaner. This will keep your seats and carpet looking and smelling fresh.
  3. Detailing Brushes – Buy an assortment of different sizes and styles of detail brushes to be able to clean all areas of your interior; especially those hard to reach places like the air conditioning vents.

Cleaning Supplies:

  1. Interior Cleaners – You will need different cleaners for all the different surfaces of your car’s interior. Be sure to also use the right cleaner for your car’s interior. For example, if you have leather seats, use a cleaner made for cleaning leather. This will be different if you have cloth seats. You will need specific cleaning products for all areas of your car’s interior; seats, carpet, dash, console, and glass.
  2. Cleaning Materials – Buy an assortment of different rags, towels, cloths, and sponges. You should also have a large supply of Q-Tips on hand for those small nooks and crannies. Microfiber cloths work best for polishing. Armor All has a good selection of cleaning, polishing, and protectant cloths.
  3. Exterior Cleaners and Waxes – Use a detergent made for cleaning automobiles. Although Dawn may be great for dishes, it may not be the best for your cars paint finish. Wash your car with a detergent made for cars. After it dries apply a coat of quality wax to protect the automobiles finish.

Let the Cleaning Begin

Start with the carpet and floor mats since they will most likely be the dirtiest. Remove the mats and put them aside for the moment. Vacuum and then clean the carpet using your carpet cleaner. Before putting the mats back in, be sure to clean them. You can lightly beat them with a broom handle or other object. This will also loosen the dirt and make them easier to vacuum. Then clean them using the carpet cleaner and replace them after they are dry.

Next, clean the seats and upholstery. Vacuum thoroughly and be sure to get in between the seat and the backrest. If you notice any stains use the upholstery cleaner to remove them. Wipe down the dash using a cleaner made for the type of material being cleaned. Clean the instrument panel and use glass cleaner for the clear plastic areas. Use Q-tips and brushes to clean the air conditioner vents and other small areas.

Next, wash and wax the exterior of the automobile. After it dries, use glass cleaner to clean all the windows and glass both inside and out; and be sure to also clean the mirrors as well. If there are chrome areas on your vehicle use chrome polish to shine those areas. Finally, use a tire cleaner to clean the rims and tires of the vehicle. After the tires are dry you can also apply a product such as Armor All to condition the tires and give them that new tire look.
